Bike!Bike! is an annual conference for community bicycle shop organizers from around the country (and abroad) who come together to explore, share, affirm, and critique our work. The organizers of Bici are planning to attend the annual Bike!Bike! Southeast regional conference, taking place in Louisville, KY March 19-21.

Heartbrakes Recap

The main lesson to take away from the 2nd Annual Heartbrakes Alley Cat benefit is, if you don't do Karaoke, you're a pussy.

Well, ok maybe that's a little harsh, but that's what I think anyway.

The evening's race participants traversed all manner of experience, gender, age, race, and regional loyalty (as well as one threesome), and it's interesting to note that each race is marked by the significant number of new faces. Which I think is great, because they all roll up to the finish line completely exhausted and by the end of the night can't wait until the next race.

Stops included a dance competition and a fortune teller that had racers doing math problems, spelling derailleur, or generally making fools of themselves in front of strangers. At one destination a shot called the "ashtray", if taken, would give the racer a 4 minute time bonus. When I questioned the racers afterward as to whether it was worth the terrible burning sensation, the responses were mixed.

Prizes went out to first, second, and third place, as well as first out of town team, first mixed gender team, first junior, and DFL. Which means that most participants won something in the end. They liked that.

The after party consisted of ridiculous photo booth fun, dance party time with DJ Nastique, karaoke, and pie. Oh the pie. It was absolutely delicious and savored by all. Especially considering the amazing group of people who brought it up from Greensboro, AL from their Pie Lab. You should take a moment and check out what they've got going on over there; it's inspiring to say the least.

The karaoke was of course fantastic. Duets, medal renditions, and extreme tone deafness stand out as beautiful moments.

The beer was flowing, the company was wonderful, and I think it's safe to say that good times were had by all.

We're gearing up for the race and party tomorrow night, which will be taking place regardless of weather conditions.
$10 enterance fee for racers and attenders alike - beer, pie, karaoke, and DJ NASTIQUE await!

Racers, bring a lock and some dollars for challenges along the route, and please please please bring a helmet.

Non-racers, there are plenty of stops along the route to hang out, observe the action, and heckle, but these locations will not be revealed until race time.

Saturday Oct 10: Bici Work Day! We need to clean out and clean up. We need your help. running the shop is hard work and we are a bit backed up with bikes that need stripping, benches that need building and parts organization. Oh, and a bit of gardening. 2pm-till? November 7-8: Moss Rock Festival. We will be there preaching the Gospel of Bici. come say hi.

Bike Valet at The Show at Woodlawn

Bici will be providing Bike Valet at Birmingham Art Collectives The Show at Woodlawn. We are excited to be involved with such an event in our city. "The Birmingham Art Collective works to help artists, designers, photographers, writers, musicians, actors, and other creatives in Birmingham promote themselves and their work." (from their website)

This show will be a chance to introduce people to Woodlawn, a neighborhood in our dear city.

Providing Bike Valet is encouraging people to get to know that neighborhood in a way that you just can't get in a car.

How does it work?

You ride your bike to the show, bring us your bike, get a ticket...that's it! We keep your bike safe and you get to bypass the parking hassle and do a good thing at the same time. You will be able to ride right up to the door! How can you turn that down?

Alabama bike laws

We get lots of questions about what the laws for Bicycles in the State of Alabama are. In order to help everyone, here they are. Please read them carefully and ride safely.

It is kind of long, but I didn't want to leave any out!

Traffic laws apply to persons riding bicycles.

Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle by this chapter, except as to special regulations in this article and except as to those provisions of this chapter which by their nature can have no application.
(Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §12-102.)

Riding on bicycles.

(a) A person propelling a bicycle shall not ride other than upon or astride a permanent and regular seat attached thereto.

(b) No bicycle shall be used to carry more persons at one time than the number for which it is designed and equipped.
(Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §12-103.)

Clinging to vehicles.

No person riding upon any bicycle, coaster, roller skates, sled or toy vehicle shall attach the same or himself to any vehicle upon a roadway.
(Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §12-104.)

Riding on roadways and bicycle paths.

(a) Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable, exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction.

(b) Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.

(c) Wherever a usable path for bicycles has been provided adjacent to a roadway, bicycle riders shall use such path and shall not use the roadway.
(Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §12-105.)

Carrying articles.

No person operating a bicycle shall carry any package, bundle or article which prevents the driver from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars.

Lamps and other equipment on bicycles.

(a) Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear of a type approved by the department which shall be visible from all distances from 100 feet to 600 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector.

(b) Every bicycle shall be equipped with a brake which will enable the operator to make the braked wheels skid on dry, level, clean pavement.
(Acts 1980, No. 80-434, p. 604, §12-107.)

Violations of article as misdemeanor; responsibility of parent or guardian; applicability of article.

(a) It is a misdemeanor for any person to do any act forbidden or fail to perform any act required in this article.

(b) The parent of any child and the guardian of any ward shall not authorize or knowingly permit any such child or ward to violate any of the provisions of this chapter.

(c) These regulations applicable to bicycles shall apply whenever a bicycle is operated upon any highway or upon any path set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles subject to those exceptions stated herein.

Bicycle Safety laws

Definitions.

As used in this article, the following words shall have the following meanings:

(1) BICYCLE. A human-powered vehicle with two wheels in tandem design to transport by the act of pedaling one or more persons seated on one or more saddle seats on its frame. "Bicycle" includes, but is not limited to, a human-powered vehicle designed to transport by the act of pedaling which has more than two wheels when the vehicle is used on a public roadway, public bicycle path, or other public road or right-of-way, but does not include a tricycle.

(2) OPERATOR. A person who travels on a bicycle seated on a saddle seat from which that person is intended to and can pedal the bicycle.

(3) OTHER PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY. Any right-of-way other than a public roadway or public bicycle path that is under the jurisdiction and control of the state or a local political subdivision thereof.

(4) PASSENGER. Any person who travels on a bicycle in any manner except as an operator.

(5) PROTECTIVE BICYCLE HELMET. A piece of headgear which meets or exceeds the impact standard for protective bicycle helmets set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the Snell Memorial Foundation, or which is otherwise approved by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

(6) PUBLIC BICYCLE PATH. A right-of-way under the jurisdiction and control of the state, or a local political subdivision thereof, for use primarily by bicyclists and pedestrians.

(7) PUBLIC ROADWAY. A right-of-way under the jurisdiction and control of the state or a local political subdivision thereof for use primarily by motor vehicular traffic.

(8) RESTRAINING SEAT. A seat separate from the saddle seat of the operator of the bicycle or a bicycle trailer or similar product that is fastened securely to the frame of the bicycle and is adequately equipped to restrain the passenger in the seat and protect the passenger from the moving parts of the bicycle.

(9) TRICYCLE. A three-wheeled human-powered vehicle designed for use by a child under the age of six.
(Acts 1995, No. 95-198, p. 306, §2.)

The purpose of this article is to reduce the incidence of disability and death resulting from injuries incurred in bicycling accidents by requiring that, while riding on a bicycle on public roadways, public bicycle paths, or other public rights-of-way, all operators and passengers who are under 16 years of age to wear approved protective bicycle helmets, and by requiring that all bicycle passengers who weigh less than 40 pounds or are less than 40 inches in height be seated in separate restraining seats.

Unlawful for person to use bicycle under certain conditions.

It is unlawful for any person to use a bicycle on a public roadway, public bicycle path, other public rights-of-way, state, city, or county public park under any one of the following conditions:

(1) For any person under the age of 16 years to operate or be a passenger on a bicycle unless at all times the person wears a protective bicycle helmet of good fit, fastened securely upon the head with the straps of the helmet.

(2) For any person to operate a bicycle with a passenger who weighs less than 40 pounds or is less than 40 inches in height unless the passenger is properly seated in and adequately secured in a restraining seat.

(3) For any parent or legal guardian of a person under the age of 16 years to knowingly permit the person to operate or be a passenger on a bicycle in violation of subdivision (1) or (2).

Now you know! So make sure to get that front light and rear reflector...it's the law!

Bici takes on Atl!

Well folks, in just a few hours we leave for Atlanta, where we will be competing in FM24, a 24 relay hour race put on by Faster Mustache! We are scared, excited, scared and stoked. Somehow we managed to have 2 teams representing the Magic City...The Bici Coop Dapper Lads (Alan, Jesse, Sam, Bob, Matthew) and the The Bici Coop SexyFun (Elisa, Anna, Kate, Brooke, Patrick, Tommy).

Food is packed, tents are rented and lycra is washed. We are ready to hang out, meet new people, ride our butts off and have a ton of fun.

Big Thanks and Big Love

Well the Flirty 30 was equal parts exciting, horrifying, unbelievable, fun, draining, and drunken. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everyone who came out to race and/or party. I especially want to thank those few brave men who came out with their skirts and showed us ladies what it's all about. Also, thanks to all our fabulous sponsors: Green Guru, Recycled Accessories, Headset, Crestwood Coffee Company, Banjo Brothers, Some New Trend, Chrome, and Bikeskirt. And a big thanks to PBR for supporting the Sunday Night Skid, who then shared their beer-rific leftovers with us. Hooray!

For those of you who don't know, Rebecca Barton got in an accident while racing and ended up with a serious head injury. She is still in critical condition at the hospital, so please keep her in your thoughts. We all hope for a speedy and complete recovery. Unfortunately, she wasn't wearing a helmet. We've decided to make helmets mandatory for all future events; I just wish that it wasn't an accident that prompted us to make such a rule.

Please wear your helmet folks!

This is from Birmingham's infamous DirtDog and his cycling group email. If you can come out and help, please do. I can't imagine life without a bike, and don't think anyone else should.

We could really use some help from local cyclists next Friday, August 7th. At the Lakeshore Foundation, we'll be helping U.S. Veterans that lost their sight in the service enjoy riding a bike again. This is an event called Operation Night Vision, and Steve Fair helps out every year. He's really short on volunteers this time and if any of you are willing to take a day to help out, we'd be eternally grateful.

We're looking for both strong riders willing to captain tandem bikes and also for people willing to assist the veterans as needed with getting on and off the bikes. Its an all day event, but there are two shifts (9-12 and 1-4) if you can't stay all day. Any time you are willing to give is greatly appreciated.

If you're interested or know someone that would be, please let me know! Its an incredible experience and one neither you or the soldiers will soon forget.........

Well, starting this Saturday and continuing on until Oct 10, Bici will be partnering with Jones Valley Urban Farm to blend your breakfast at Pepper Place Farmers Market!

Come by anytime between 7-12, follow the steps outlined in our groovy new poster (thanks TSC!) and pedal your breakfast. What better way to start the day? Peaches, blueberries and strawberries are all in season...yummy. You buy some fruit from one of the many farmers, we provide the yogurt and ice, you provide the power and voila! (Oh, and it's FREE...although donations are always welcome)

First we have the Atlanta crew, with a fun filled weekend! No Brakes is having their 2nd Anniversary Race & Party on Friday, July 10.
On Saturday there's a pro velo race at the Dick Lane Velodrome, should be awesome to watch. Then on Sunday there's another velo race, this time for messengers and city bikers, with Cyclehawk's velocity. Winners get a free trip to Tokyo!

Pensacola Alley in Pensacola, Fl is also having a fun filled weekend, with their Blue Angels Alleycat. Looks like a whole lotta good times, and the beach too!

Finally, here in Birmingham we have a couple of things that you really should attend. If you haven't heard yet, our dear beloved Bottletree Cafe is in a financial pickle, and needs YOUR sweet lovin' to help them out! Saturday night they are having a free show to help business, so get yo booty over there and buy some drinks! Yours truly will be there rocking out (or something similar) with Andy's Tea Party.

Sunday night is the first of many events with The Sunday Night Skid! Every other Sunday our dear pals Matthew and John are going to be running the show with sprints and bike games. They are also doing some sort of point system, but you'll have to go to their site to get info on that.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our 1st Annual Bici Garden Party Race and Party at Jones Valley Urban Farm. It was a wonderful success! We had a surprising and encouraging turnout.

A large group did a fun ride around the city and threw seed bombs in an attempt to spread some Bike Love to areas that need some beauty and life. Mt.St.Mtn played and really rocked our faces off. Jones Valley had the bike blender out and some fantastic Bellinis were pedaled to creation. The Keg was tapped, the food was eaten and all was well.

Results:

1st place-Stewart Haddock of Atlanta
2nd Place- Jason Barker of Birmingham
3rd Place-Chris Schwartz of Atlanta

The race was incredible. The racers had to get to the 9th floor of a parking deck, navigate a gay pride parade (unplanned!) and find an obscure building downtown. There were 3 flats but no injuries. A good night indeed.

I knew it would be low, but I certainly didn't expect that we would be in the very last spot. Number 50; seriously harsh!

Free the Hops! Share the Road!

Last night, Anna and I biked to the Free the Hops meeting (side note: never, EVER bike down Valley Ave!) to propose Bike Valet at Magic City Brewfest.

It literally took about 30 seconds to convince them to get on board. The idea of making Brewfest a completely green event is exciting and we are happy to be a part of it. They gave us primo parking location...right next to the entrance. We are hoping to get a good buzz going about this and show that Birmingham is not as backwards and behind as most people think!

What is Bike Valet?
Like Car Valet or coat check! You ride up (we will also be posting routes and having group rides to the event), drop off your bike, we give you a ticket...you drink and be merry while we make sure your 2 wheeled friend stays safe and cozy. At the end, show us your ticket, we give you back your ride. You go home feeling happy and good about doing something good for Mother Nature (can't speak for your liver!)

Why Bike Valet?
Have you tried to park down there? Yeah, it is bad. Plus, you get to enjoy the scenery and park for free (donations welcome!), knowing your bike is safe and secure. Can you say that about your car? nope.

What is Free the Hops?
Alabama has a stupid law that limits beer sold to be 6% alcohol by volume or below, which prevents us from getting delicious "craft" or "gourmet" beers. Free the Hops has been lobbying to change the law for a number of years. We're on pins and needles right now because the bill has passed the senate, but we're waiting on the Governors signature for the law to be changed. He has until Monday night I think so fingers crossed!

Why are you doing this?
To be kind to our earth, promote cycling and hopefully set a precedent in Birmingham for other large events. Bike Valet is the future!!!

How do I get there?
More info to come, with routes from various locations as well as meeting places for group rides there.

How can I help?

Bicycling is only healthy when you ride safely

It's clear that bicycling is good for the environment...when it takes vehicles off the road. It's also clear that bicycling is good for your health...when you practice safety.

May is National Bike Safety Month. As this Administration works to develop environmentally-sound transportation options, making our streets more bike-friendly is high on the list. Our roads and communities must be built to allow people to get around safely outside of their cars, on bike or on foot.

But, as more people take to bicycling, that idea can only be sound when drivers and cyclists help each other share the roads safely.

Motorists should:

Recognize that bicyclists have a right to ride on the roadway;
Stay alert and keep distractions to a minimum;
Make a complete visual check for bicyclists before entering or leaving a lane of traffic.

But, bicyclists have an obligation as well. They should:

Ride on the roadway, rather than on sidewalks;
Follow the same rules of the road as other vehicles;
Wear a bicycle helmet every time you ride;
Make yourself visible, day and night.

Please take the time to visit the content-rich Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center and the National Center for Safe Routes to School. Best practices for bicycle safety can also be found on the League of American Bicyclists and Bicycle Safe sites. The International Bicycle Fund has a great list of bike safety resources.

We all know about "defensive driving." But, bicyclists are vulnerable and exposed in a way that motorists simply are not. While we are working to improve conditions for bicyclists on the roadways, let's, please, remember the culture we've created over the last 100 years will not welcome bikes overnight. In the meantime, during National Bike Safety Month and throughout the year, I urge you to "bike defensively."

What do you think? I think that any emphasis on biking from the DOT is good, although I do see some errors in this (keep distractions to a minimum?? really...what about avoid distractions).

May is National Bike Month! The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week
from May 11-15. Bike-to-Work Day is on Friday, May 15 at 7:00 a.m. A bicycle commuter convoy
will depart from the fountain at Five Points South (Birmingham’s Southside). The group will ride a 6-
mile route throughout Birmingham’s City Center to tour ongoing and future downtown revitalization
projects and to raise cycling awareness. The ride will terminate between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. at the
Center for Regional Planning and Design, 1731 1st Avenue North, where there will be a photo
opportunity, news media, cold drinks, and distribution of giveaway items for all participants. For

FAQ:

1. How much does it cost? $80 per year
2. What do I get? A wicked awesome membership card. Oh, AND unlimited use of our tools and mechanics. You only pay for parts. Crazy, I know! Did I mention that we have members only nights? Third Thursday of every month is just for you guys! You are also supporting a really great thing in Birmingham.
3. How do I pay? Get us some cash money or write a check. We take both. One day soon we will have a Paypal account and you will be able to pay that way.
4. What don't I get? Us bothering you about money (like NPR...who we love, btw).

If you can't afford the $80, holler at us. We can probably work something out. We need committed volunteers. Nothing is free, but no one will be turned away for monetary reasons.

Bicycling for Transportation and Health

My pal April sent me this article from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation about a study out of Portland earlier today. I thought it was so great that I wanted to share it with you all.

The aim of the study was to see how people utilize their bikes, and to determine whether biking for transportation is a feasible way of achieving the recommended amount of physical activity. Basically, the researchers put GPS tracking devices on bikes and tracked the number of miles that were rode over a seven day period. They found that 60% of riders were active even more than recommended, and the participants rode mostly for utilitarian purposes rather than for exercise.

They also found that the majority of riders utilized bike lanes and separate paths, and that this type of infrastructure is an important element for riders. From the article: "This study underscores active living can be achieved for adults through routine cycling for transport if the environment is supportive".

that's right kids. anna, elisa, and i have been working round the clock on getting the shop ready for our may 1st grand opening. special thanks to terry jacks at non stop art, the guys at cahaba cycles, banjo brothers, DTMT, and our good friends at primavera coffee roasters. Also thanks to all the folks who came in to help us finish build out.

the race format is a relay. each racer will circle a highland ave loop (starting and ending at the bici shop). we will probably have heats of three teams, timing each teams' time and the team with the best time wins. pretty simple. we will have some music inside the shop, as well as giving tours, taking donations, and sipping on brewskies. that being said this event is BYOB for those that are of age.

if you have any old bikes, tools, storage shelves, or money you don't really want we promise we will put them to use so bring 'em down.

GOOD Liveable Streets

There has been much talk lately about Liveable streets, esp now that the Complete Streets Act is in the Senate. GOOD Magazine (which I subcribe to and simply love) had this feature on their website today.

The article

"It’s easy to forget that our streets are alterable. They weren’t set down by God on the eighth day; they were designed by human beings. Unfortunately, throughout the 20th century, most of the human beings designing our streets were traffic engineers. For the most part, they viewed the city from behind a windshield and saw the street as a problem to be solved for automobiles. The result is the American city that most of us know today: sprawling, traffic-choked, hostile to pedestrians and cyclists, dependent on a vast, never-ending flow of cheap oil, and deeply unsustainable.

Streets can and must be more than just a place for the movement and storage of private motor vehicles. The urban street of the 21st century will be a “complete street,” accommodating pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders alike. At the Livable Streets Initiative we are helping citizens re-envision streets as great public spaces. Take, for example, the busy intersection of Amsterdam Avenue and West 76th Street in Manhattan"...

In more local news, Anna and I went to a reception and talk given by Dan Burden on Walkable Communities. It was really hopeful and interesting. He said so many things that are obvious yet completely new to many people (i.e. designing your city to the people instead of the car), and he also showed streets in Birmingham that can be 'reclaimed' using the current dimensions. It is time to reclaim our city from the car!

Hey there. Fellow cyclists and Bici supporter/friend Jerry Griffes needs some help manning a rest stop at this years Tour de Cure.

Details are April 25 8:00am, The Dogtrack on Derby Road, Irondale, to go with supplies, to man a rest stop involving the distribution of nourishment and good cheer to the riders of the ADA Tour de Cure, concluding early afternoon on the same day that being, April 25.

Labor involved includes but is not limited to the making of sandwiches, slicing fruit, eating fig newtons, mixing energy drinks, talking, singing, and generally providing moral support in a sometimes hectic environ.

Jerry can pick up the carless or they can ride the 30 miles to the rest stop...

I will be out of town, otherwise I would be all over this. Great way to meet cyclists and show some support. Want to ride? It's not too late! sign up and support a great cause and get to ride your bike!

What is Bici all about?!

I thought I would take a few minutes to spell out what Bici is and hopes to be about. I hope this clears up any questions you may have about our purpose in Birmingham and our communities.

The word that seems to come up in all of our meetings and encompasses what we want to achieve is this...Empowerment. We hope to empower Birmingham and her citizens with our 3 pillars: Advocacy, Education and Access.

Advocacy: In order to empower citizens to ride, we need to make sure Birmingham is a safe place for cycling, both as recreation and transportation

Ways to advocate for cycling:

1. Communication with key leaders in the community and State
2. Stay abreast of current Transportation initiatives and trends, both locally and nationally.
3. Have a strong presence in Birmingham (group rides, etc)
4. Increase community involvement in politics by educating them on initiatives, laws, key meetings, etc.
5. Educate the community on the importance of cycling and it’s positive impact on Birmingham
6. Advocate and fight for bike lanes and infrastructure for alternative transportation.

Education: To give both new and old riders, as well as drivers a way to become educated on cycling safety.

Way to educate:

1. Safe cycling practices-share these with new riders and refresh current riders. Monthly safe practices group rides.
2.Educate people on how to maintain their bicycle for optimal and safe riding conditions. Daily people are seen riding bikes that are obviously unsafe
3. Know the state and city cycling laws and communicate these to riders.
4. Youth program-safety, access and fun.
5. Educate the community on the importance of cycling and it’s positive impact on Birmingham (obesity, crime, pollution)
6. Maps of safe routes

Access: To give people of all backgrounds access to reliable transportation and recreation.

Way to provide access:

1. Access to tools
2. Ability to acquire a bike with labor hours and little cost
3. A space in which to maintain bikes
4. Access to a community of like minded people, who can share knowledge, expertise and common experiences.

In his blog, Welcome to the Fast Lane, Ray Lahood said "I think everyone, urban and rural alike, needs safe and affordable access. Access to work, to medical services, to schools, to shopping, to recreation, and to other essential activities."

We couldn't agree more. This is a crucial time for Birmingham, with crime, obesity, pollution and poverty at astounding levels. We need to get people to work, school and around their communities safely and reliably. Bicycling could be the answer, no...IS the answer. Bici feels so strongly about this that we are all willing to work long hours in addition to our regular jobs to make this happen.

Thanks for all of your support. We can't do this without the support and encouragement of the community (and money, we need some of that...). In a year, I hope to be sitting here looking at how far we have come and how much of our vision has come to fruition. Hey, that rhymed!

So Fresh and so clean, clean

Today's Spring Bike Cleaning was a success! Thanks to everyone who came out and played...and donated. We ended up staying out until 4:30, enjoying bike talk, softball throwing, Tofu Dogs and beer. Puppies and Toddlers as well. It was a lovely spring day, despite the weatherman's warning. The skies cleared around 10 and by 11, the sun was shining and the good times were rollin'.

My name is Lance Taylor, I am one of the co-host of the Roundtable on WJOX. My partner and I made some borderline ridiculous comments about cycling on Thursday and as you know there has been some obvious fallout. I do want to let you know, not that it matters, that what was blogged were not my direct comments. It really doesn't matter because my comments were uneducated. I would like to tell you that the past 48 hours have been a little strange and to be honest unproductive for all parties.

With all of that said I think that there is an opportunity for not only WJOX, but our listeners to learn a little bit more about what your community has to deal with on a daily basis.
As I have stated, I made a mistake, but why not use positive energy and let others like myself become informed of the dangers of motorists and cyclists.

WJOX DJ threatens cyclists on air

The hosts of the "Round Table" on WJOX have, from what I understand, repeatedly said that their statements were taken out of context and they are not advocating violence against cyclists and their best friend/brother-in-law, etc is a cyclist.... They, from what I assume is responding to the "heat", are requesting that the show be contacted and not the advertisers.

I haven't heard the statements, etc, but it seems that the "out of context" excuse is the go to excuse used by all. If someone could get a recording of the comments, I guess we could determine the context. However, I personally have a hard time understanding what context suggesting someone clip a cyclist and send them flying over the handlebars could imply.

Today (Thursday )on WJOX 94.5 Birmingham (around 11:50 AM) one of the DJ's advocated hitting cyclists with cars. He said "I wish people would hit them, just clip them and send them flying over their handlebars." The context was he was angry with cyclists riding in the road. I have called the station and have been put thru to voice mail with nobody responding. Maybe with added voices an apology and clarification will be achieved.........................................

PlEASE CALL TODAY AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. I plan to do the same with their sponsors. This is unacceptable, dangerous and malicious.

Another Monday night, another Bici Board meeting. Tonight we had tacos and really fleshed out our mission statement, as well as planned some exciting fundraisers and events. Stay tuned for news on those.

As part of our focus on advocacy and education, we are trying to stay abreast of all the national and local news pertaining to bicycling, alternative transportation, safety and the like. Today I saw this and was really excited, so I wanted to share it.

Ray LaHood, the new Secretary of Transportation, has a website and blog that he posts to, Welcome to the Fast Lane. So far I have been impressed by LaHood, from his declaration at The National Bike Summit that "You have a full partner at the DOT" to his decision to have officials study the European models of cities.

Today however, I was most impressed. I read the March 13 entry to Welcome to the Fast Lane, entitled "Cyclists are important users of transportation systems "

"On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of addressing the National Bike Summit. I was invited to speak as a member of the Obama administration, but I have been a supporter of bicycling for many years and was a member of the Congressional Bike Caucus when I was in Congress.

Still, I don't think the League of American Bicyclists knew what to expect when they invited me to their summit.

I hope they were pleasantly surprised because I am committed to investing in programs that encourage bikes to coexist with other modes and to safely share our roads and bridges. And there’s strong support in Congress for these goals as well.

In the Department of Transportation, bicyclists have a full partner in working toward livable communities. We're excited that the Federal Highway Administration is looking at best practices in Europe to improve safety and mobility for walkers and cyclists. We're excited that a federally funded pilot project to study the effects of improved walking and bicycling facilities in four communities is underway. I think I conveyed that excitement to the summit, judging by the early response (BikePortland.org, Streetsblog.org)

I welcome the vigor of the bicycling community in advocating for bike-friendly measures in the upcoming authorization bill, CLEAN-TEA. Bicycles are a critical part of a cleaner, greener future in American transportation, so keep those wheels spinning."

Let's hope he is a man of his word. It is time for a change in this country and LaHood seems to be on track.

Complete Streets Act of 2009

A Complete Streets Act has been introduced in the House and Senate (HR1443). This is huge for cyclists and pedestrians and much needed in our country.

What would this do? ensure that all users of the transportation system, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, children, older individuals, and individuals with disabilities, are able to travel safely and conveniently on and across federally funded streets and highways.

Birmingham has an alarming poverty rate, and I see people everyday riding bike on unsafe roads (Crestwood Blvd for example), just trying to get to work or home. The Complete streets Act of 2009 would ensure that these people could use cycling as the safe, reliable transportation that it is, without fear or ridicule.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
go here and send a letter to your representatives and senator urging them to co-sponsor the Act. This is too good to let pass us by. Imagine-Complete streets as a government policy. I almost can't believe it. The new blood in Washington seems to truly be behind alternative transportation, as seen by this and the National Bike Summit 2009. There is hope now more than ever.

I Just Need Some Space

Here is an excellent video sent in by Nolan. It really makes you wonder about how our laws work and are enforced. What do you do when the police don't know the laws they are supposed to be enforcing? Where do you go when they refuse to take action against proven violators? I have had similar experiences in town where the local police couldn't be more wrong and told me to do things contradictory to the law. Driving on the streets is a privilege, not a right. Many motorist are so disconnected with the world outside of their windows and have no idea what it's like to be buzzed by their own vehicles. Cyclists pay taxes, have families, contribute to society, and yet are treated like second class citizens. You say we don't belong on the roads - you're wrong. How did we get to a point where motorists feel so entitled?

"We need to educate the public to go around cyclists, way around-- change lanes all together, but 3-5 feet minimum. Please pass this on & help save a life. Skimming by cyclists is deadly and illegal.

Last Friday, a well known cycling advocate and frame builder was killed in Chattanooga when a truck's bumper just caught his bike bag -- truck driver said he never noticed until he saw the dead body in the road. Then it's too late.

Cyclists do have a right to the lane & even if this angers you, killing them is the wrong answer. Cyclists don't and can't always keep a straight line, please don't expect them to. Don't honk, don't skim-- just go around and let them live.

No, not every cyclists obeys every law, but neither do drivers. We all should.

Let's watch out for each other. Neither person benefits from killing or hurting a cyclist-- both lives are messed up (families, friends, vehicles, insurance, families, the court system...)

Please give a wide berth when you go around and pass safely. Please."

As you know, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was recently passed. Did you know that Alabama has had $513,692,000 appropriated to it for Highway Infrastructure Investment, with $22,996,589 allocated to Birmingham?

Highway Infrastructure Investment is defined this way by www.stimulus.alabama.gov: The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provides additional funding for restoration repair, construction, rail transportation and port infrastructure projects. Some of these funds will be awarded as competitive grants, while some of the funds will be distributed to states by formula. the Secretary of Transportation will automatically distribute the funds within 21 days after the date of enactment.

This would be where bike lanes and "Complete Streets" come in. What can you do? Write a letter to Birmingham's leaders asking that they spend Stimulus funds on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. Sound daunting? No worries...I have already put together a letter you can simply copy, change the appropriate name (yours) and email. Please do this, we need all the voices we can get!

The largest obstacle for opening the shop is obviously money. So in an effort to save a few hundred dollars I am looking for a couple of welders to help us out with some DIY bike stands. This is the best one I have found. Looks pretty stout and workable. If you or anyone you know welds or even better has an extra bike stand lying around please let us know.

Meeting Recap

Hey Everyone. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Community Interest Meeting. It was nice to see such support and community. Thanks again to Nomad Supply Shop for hosting us. If you have not been there, go check it out.

For those of you who couldn't make it, I will attempt to recap what went on.

First, Anna explained why Birmingham needs a Community bike shop. Our Obesity rate is off the charts. As is our pollution particle rate. Poverty runs rampant and we are all aware of the crime rate. All of these things will be impacted by a Community Bike shop opening in Birmingham City. Bikes and Bike shops build community, make our neighborhoods more liveable and promote physical activity. Riding a bike is also a great, reliable form of transportation in a city where Public transportation is lacking. In order to get more people on bikes, we must educate and empower them, as well a work to make the city more cycling friendly. At Bici, we hope to touch on all of these aspects.

Alan then spoke of the history of Bici, his brainchild. He told of how he wanted a place in the city limits to work on his bike and where others could do the same. A place for the cyclists of Birmingham to form a community and share knowledge, tools and a love of riding.

I (Elisa) then talked about the specifics of the Bici shop. We hope to be funded by memberships, donations and grants. Memberships will cost approx $60-$80 (we are still working on a price that will be accessible, yet allow us to function in a sustainable manner). We will be seeking donations from individuals as well as corporations. Bici will also be completely volunteer run with both members and non-members hopefully volunteering to help in the shop. Many folks filled out our volunteer interest form, yet we still need more. Bici hopes to be open 2-3 nights per week and Saturday afternoon.

We do have a verbal agreement on a physical location in the Highland Park neighborhood (next to the Unity Church). We hope to be moved in and open mid-April. This spot is ideal and we are very lucky to have found it.

How can you help?
Fill out the Volunteer Interest form. We are in need of manpower, on everything from actually working in the shop to fundraising, paperwork and advocacy help.
Donate! We need money, parts, bikes and tools. Got any of that? Spare workbench in your garage...send it our way!
Become a member: As a cooperative, we are member owned and supported. Members will get special perks, but the main reason to become a member is to support something awesome and help make Birmingham a cycling city. More info to come (soon) on memberships and how to become a member.
Spread the word: the more the merrier. We need members and supporters. This is a community shop, so we need the community!
Ride your bike! The more cyclists on the road, the more our presence is known. We want and need for the government, drivers...everyone to know that we are here and we are doing good.

Again, thanks to everyone who came out, or emailed to express interest. This is going to take all of us working together and will be a great thing for Birmingham!

Alright kids,

Here we are. Four days out. Things are coming together and others are falling apart. And by falling apart. We were all square on the route and all of that and then Larry starts paving downtown. Don't get me wrong, it needed to happen, and there is nothing like riding on that fresh, luxurious asphalt; it just couldn't be worse time for the race. so we will be coming up with an alternate route in the event that the roads aren't done. Nevertheless brocycle, bici, and all of the sponsors strongly urge the use of the helmet whenever you ride, but especially during the race. Who knows we could be doing a smaller scale Paris-Roubaix. Anyway come Friday night or Saturday we will post which route will go down.

Race Details:

1.) This is a team race. A team consists of two people. If you don't have anyone when you show up we will try to set you up with another 'stag' rider. The team that has both members at first Greencup wins.

2.) This is a lap race. The race will leave from Greencup, a halfway stop at Greencup, and ending at Greencup. All other stops can be hit at any order you and your teammate please.

3.) As of now, we haven't found any food sponsors for the racers when the race ends. We will try to have something set up for Saturday night. If you want to bring food or work for or own an eatery PLEASE DONATE!

4.) We do, however, have an adult beverage sponsor for racers that are old enough to partake. (sorry, we have messed up priorities)

5.) We will have waivers for each racer to sign upon embarking on the race. WE DO NOT CONDONE/ENDORSE THE BREAKING OF TRAFFIC LAWS! YOU ARE RACING AT YOUR OWN RISK! WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE USE OF A HELMET!

6.) Have fun!

1.) Greencup has asked us that this event not be BYOB. They have been generous enough with letting us use the space and would be glad to give you an ice cold brew after a donation.

A quick shout out to everyone we met this weekend at bike!bike!. It was a privilege to spend a weekend with great, like-minded people. We met so many interesting, kind, crazy, fun and authentic folks. Riding with all of you was a blast, and we can't wait to do it again.

Special thanks to the crew at Sopo. You housed us, fed us (thanks to Food Not Bombs Atlanta) and taught us a TON. Your shop is an inspiration. As a bonus, you guys are all cool as hell.

If anyone is in the Birmingham area, hit us up. We'll ride the mean streets, drink some beer and dance our asses off! You always have a couch or floor to crash on here in the Dirty South.

Bike! Bike! report. Day One (and a half)

Well, today was Day one of bikebike SE. Yesterday Alan and I arrived and met some really cool folks, had dinner with a friend, rode around ATL a bit, and hung out at Sopo bike co-op. It was an exhausting day, to say the least.

Today, however, we started with the workshops. Wow. Between the 2 of us, we have learned how to set up a shop, structuring our organization and working with the mainstream media. That doesn't even take into account all of the contacts we have made and stories of successful and disastrous shops. I think we will come back with a much better idea of how to set ourselves up and get started.

One day in and I realize that we are very organized and ahead of the game on that, BUT we have a lot to learn and hash out as well. Daunting, yes, but exciting as well. I am ready to get back to Birmingham, full of knowledge (and some new riding skills...ATL is a bit different from Birmingham!), ideas and support from folks around the country, and get this thing started!

The best part has been meeting new, like minded folks and hearing their stories. Bike Co-ops that started out of cars, ones that have been around for 5 years and all the people who started them. The support system we are setting up this weekend is priceless and I know it is going to be a lifesaver as we continue. Sitting around eating vegan food and talking about bikes after a sunny ride through the neighborhood...if I ever wondered why we are embarking on this, that reminds me. Because being on a bike is my favorite place to be and I want others to know that feeling.

ok, so the deuce's wild race went swimmingly. everyone had a good time and stayed safe for the most part. thanks to everyone who participated and helped out. we came out of it with around $5 for the co-op (we had more but all the racers looked hungry after the race so we fed them.) so on that note we are back to where we started financially but we have made progress in other directions. currently, former OG brocyclist, paul halupka, is working on a logo for the co op which will allow us to make swag to sell and raise funds. also one of the infamous triathabloggers, elisa, is down for a group trip over to bike!bike! to learn all things bike co-op. i have already asked off work and there are a couple of people that are interested. if you want to go leave a comment and start some dialogue. we will have more news as the date gets closer.

also, if you or anyone you know is a commuting lawyer who knows how to do non profit stuff HOOK A DUDE UP!

what started in an informal conversation after the connect four alley cat is slowly becoming more and more of a reality. mike over at greencup is helping us setup a shed in the alley behind greencup to serve as a community bike shop for the birmingham city center. the goal is to provide a place for urban cyclists to repair their bikes for little to no cost through providing tools and space that the average cyclist doesn't have access to. in the next couple of weeks a lot will be developing so keep an eye on this blog for all the news.
